International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, has set up a pilot plant for manufacturing Nd-Fe-B (Neodymium-Iron-Boron) rare earth permanent magnets.
The facility was inaugurated by Abhay Karandikar, along with R. Vijay. The plant features an end-to-end production setup, covering processes from strip-cast alloy manufacturing to finished sintered magnets, aimed at building a self-reliant ecosystem in advanced materials.
This initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s position in the global rare earth value chain and achieving self-sufficiency in critical materials. Nd-Fe-B magnets are widely used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
With this development, ARCI seeks to boost domestic production capabilities and reduce reliance on imports for these strategically important materials.
